About Redact PDF

Reach for this when you need to hand off a PDF with names, account numbers, or other sensitive details actually removed, not just hidden. You draw boxes over the parts you want gone, and instead of laying a black rectangle on top of live text, it rebuilds every affected page as an image-only page so the data underneath is genuinely deleted. Because those pages become images, their text is no longer selectable or searchable, and you cannot copy it back out. Frequently asked

Can someone recover the text I covered?
No. The page under each box is rebuilt as an image-only page, so the original text and data are gone rather than just hidden beneath a rectangle. There is no live text layer left to select, copy, or pull back out.
Will the text still be selectable after redacting?
No, not on the pages you redact. Those pages are flattened into images so the hidden content is truly removed, which means their text is no longer selectable or searchable. Pages you do not touch keep their original text.
Does it redact the whole document or just the pages I mark?
Only the pages where you draw boxes are rebuilt as images. Pages you leave alone are kept as-is, so the rest of the document stays selectable and unchanged. The output is a single PDF.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The redaction runs entirely in your browser and your file never leaves your device. Open the Network tab while you work and you will see no file-upload request.
