Overview

About PDF → EPUB

Reach for this when you want to read a PDF on an e-reader or phone, where reflowing text to fit the screen beats pinching and panning a fixed page. Reflowable mode pulls the selectable text out of the PDF and rebuilds it into a chapter that flows, and it can drop repeated headers and footers, join hard line breaks back into paragraphs, and stitch words split by line-end hyphens. If the PDF is a scan or has a layout too intricate to reconstruct, switch to fixed-layout mode, which renders each page as an image instead. You set the title, author, and language, and the file is converted in your browser.

Questions

Frequently asked

What's the difference between reflowable and fixed-layout mode?
Reflowable mode rebuilds the PDF's selectable text into chapters that reflow to fit any screen, with optional cleanup of repeated headers and footers, wrapped lines, and line-end hyphenation. Fixed-layout mode renders each page as an image and keeps the original look, which suits scans and complex layouts but produces no selectable text.
Will the text be selectable and searchable in the EPUB?
In reflowable mode, yes, because it converts the actual text from the PDF. In fixed-layout mode the pages are images, so the text is not selectable or searchable. Note that reflowable mode needs a PDF that already has selectable text; a scanned PDF has none, so use fixed-layout mode for scans.
Can I set the book's title, author, and language?
Yes, you can set the title, author, and language before converting. The title defaults to the file name if you leave it blank, the author is optional, and the language sets the EPUB's metadata so readers handle it correctly.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using pdf.js to read the PDF and a local engine to build the EPUB, so your file never leaves your device. You can confirm this by opening your browser's Network tab and watching that no upload occurs.
