Overview

About Optimize

Reach for Optimize when a PDF feels heavier than it should but you don't want to touch a single pixel. It rewrites the file losslessly, dropping unused objects left behind by editing and re-saving and compressing the data streams, while leaving every image exactly as it was. Because nothing is re-encoded, text stays selectable and the visual result is identical to the original. The savings depend on the source: bloated, repeatedly edited PDFs can drop noticeably, while files that are already tight will barely change. It all runs in your browser, so the document never leaves your device.

Questions

Frequently asked

Will this reduce the quality of my images or text?
No. The shrink is fully lossless: images are left untouched and nothing is re-encoded, so the visual result is identical to the original and text stays selectable. It only removes unused objects and compresses the file's data streams.
Why did my file barely get smaller?
Lossless optimization mainly helps bloated PDFs carrying unused objects and uncompressed streams, which often come from repeated editing and re-saving. A file that is already tight has little left to remove, so the reduction will be modest.
How is this different from the Compress tool?
Optimize is lossless and never alters your images, so quality is identical but the savings are limited to structural cleanup. Compress uses Ghostscript to re-encode images for bigger reductions, which is lossy and can change image quality.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Optimize runs entirely in your browser and your file never leaves your device. You can confirm it by opening your browser's Network tab and watching for any upload request while the tool works.
